You may be to young to remember "My Fair Lady" a Broadway production that set the records for one of the longest running shows in musical theater history. The story, a tale of a wealthy professor trying to transform an "unrefined" girl into a lady, has become a classic around the world (starring Audrey Hepburn).

In the play / movie "My Fair Lady", the working class and the affluent are portrayed through their fashions. From the beginning of the story, the setting a theater, you will see an elite class of patrons leaving the theater. The men in black tuxedos and wearing top hats. The women, wearing dazzling evening gowns, and elegant pompadour hairdos, elaborately designed jeweled combs, oh, and we can't forget those ostrich feathers.

Sound's fun huh?  Have I gotten your attention yet? Read on ...

Then there's the people on the streets, wearing ragged, worn-out clothing with hats - basic plain hats - nothing to stop and take notice of. Bye for now..

The fashion high point of the movie is the horse races at Ascot, a world famous racecourse in England. A very well dressed, high society crowd is in attendance. Eliza, well into her program to become a lady, is wearing an enormous, eye catching black and white picture hat adorned with plumes and a large bow. Other ladies are also wearing black and white picture hats, adorned with flowers, plumes, and other decorations. The women's dresses are black and white as well. The men are dressed in gray coats with matching top hats. Incidentally, to this day, Ascot sets a dress code for spectators. - See more at: http://www.hattales.com/view/hats-in-the-movies/my-fair-lady/#sthash.oSlctwkQ.dpuf
There are a lot of scenes depicting everyday life and the contrast between the working class and the affluent. As the story begins, a group of upper class patrons are leaving the theater. The men are dressed in black tuxedos and wearing top hats. The women are wearing evening gowns and pompadour hairdos embellished with jeweled combs and ostrich feathers. In contrast, the other people on the street are wearing shabby, well worn clothes with a variety of hats. Eliza is wearing a black, rumpled straw hat (in a later scene, she tries to disguise her identity by adding several gaudy feathers to the hat). Men are wearing bowlers or newsboy caps.  Professor Higgins is lurking around, listening to accents for his research, and wearing a tweed fedora. - See more at: http://www.hattales.com/view/hats-in-the-movies/my-fair-lady/#sthash.oSlctwkQ.dpuf
